A Harvest Brunch

by Shirley Jantz and Walt Blackford

swirls of beautySix of us gathered, giving gaiety new meaning…. circling around the Beauty and Blessing of Earth, Women, Men and Fire: Floating candles, white and pink alstroemerias, an Artist’s touch of Grace. Thank You, Lyla, for this bowl, and all that came together for this luscious Harvest Brunch. Such was the inspiration of this bowl… bringing together favorite poetry, glorious once-a-year dishes, friendships long treasured. The night before, all of us, preparing some outrageous act of kindness and artistry… My husband, singing to the tunes of Seal, as he danced, chopped, diced and sliced, sizzled rosemary, sage and celery; me, creating prose and cranberry sauce, in equal parts, enveloped by shimmering gratitude, listening to the sounds downstairs; another couple collecting “Winter” and Mary Oliver wisdom, humor and wit, succinctly and honorably read ; friends baking gluten-free wizardry as though it was “really simple” ~ wondering if community-wide solar energy would be possible this time next year.To this, we thanked the Land, the Whidbey Farmers, the local foods present, the hands we held, the Hearts that laugh and linger in poignant appreciation. Such is the inspiration of this bowl.
